Months of Hard Work for Khalifa Al Jali have now come to fuction

21-2-2006

Months of planning and at 10.00am on Tuesday 21st February 2006 the dream for Khalifa Al-Jaraid was realised, the first ITTF Pro Tour tournament in his country, the Liebherr Kuwait Open was underway.
Khalifa Al-Jaraid, or Khalifa Jali as he is more commonly known, was understandably delighted. “I wanted to do something for the table tennis family”, he said. “It’s good for Kuwait that we have such an important tournament.”

Months of hard work for Khalifa Al-Jaraid have now come to fruition
Technical Director for the Liebherr Kuwait Open, Khalifa Al-Jaraid has vast experience in the sport of table tennis, he played internationally for Kuwait from 1978 to 1995, representing the country in several World Championships before assuming the role of national coach, a position he held until six months ago when he became responsible for technical matters.

“Table tennis is popular in Kuwait but nobody sees the best players”, continued Khalifa Al-Jaraid. “Last year I brought sixteen top players to Kuwait and everybody enjoyed the tournament.”

The Salwa Sabah Al-Ahmad International Championships
One year ago in Kuwait the Salwa Sabah Al-Ahmad International Championships were held from 16th to 18th May 2005. The tournament was named after the daughter of the Amir of Kuwait who sadly died almost four years ago from cancer; in 2006 the Liebherr Kuwait Open still bears the name `Salwa Cup’ in her memory.

The winner of the tournament last year was Romania’s Adrian Crisan, he beat Korea’s Ryu Seung Min in the final after accounting for Russia’s Fedor Kuzmin in the quarters and Austria’s Werner Schlager in the semis, whilst at the same stages the respective victims for Ryu Seung Min were China’s Ma Wenge and Austria’s Chen Weixing.

Motivated
Certainly the tournament in 2005 was well received and it motivated Khalifa Al-Jaraid who is delighted with the progress being made in Kuwait. “I’m really pleased with how the preparations have gone for the Liebherr Kuwait Open”, he continued. “We want to run the tournament every year, we’ve taken advice and the aim is to make next year’s tournament better than this year.”

A very praiseworthy attitude; keep listening, keep learning and thus make progress, for Khalifa Al-Jaraid hours of work are now bearing fruit and what was once a dream is now a reality, the Liebherr Kuwait Open is in business.

ITTF President’s Message

20-2-2006

On behalf of the ITTF it gives me great pleasure to welcome the Kuwait Open as an integral part of the ITTF Pro Tour in 2006. The Kuwait Open is designated by the ITTF as a “Premium” event, and I sincerely hope that it will remain a permanent fixture of the ITTF Pro Tour for many years to come.

It is heart warming to see that the Kuwait Table Tennis Association has rekindled its activities and has joined the top competition circuit of our Federation. This is an excellent sign of the continuous development of our sport in the region. The leadership of the Kuwait Table Tennis Association is an example to follow by all other national associations, and I can assure the full support of the ITTF to Kuwait in all its endeavours.

I would like to thank the Government authorities for their support to this prestigious event. I also wish to thank all the sponsors for their financial contribution.

To the participating players, coaches and officials, I wish you all the best in your competition and I am sure that you will enjoy the special brand of hospitality that has made Kuwait famous worldwide.
